KISSWIN Award 2010

The KISSWIN award winners have been selected!

The KISSWIN award has been awarded once at the second KISSWIN conference "Go for scientific career in Germany! Paths, funding and networks at a glance" at the bcc in Berlin. Dr. Helge Braun, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research awarded the winners in front of 700 young researchers.

The award "best doctoral supervisor" honours innovative concepts for the supervision of doctoral students and the laureates receive awards totalling 10.000 Euro.  The prize money will have to be used by the laureates for further support of young researchers. The jury, consisting of members of the BuWIN advisory council of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, selected the best doctoral supervisors from the many candidates.

First Place Winner


First place winner is Prof. Dr. Simone Winko who received 5.000. Mrs Winko works as a professor for German philology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Since 2006 she also works as co-speaker for the doctoral college "Wertung und Kanon. Theorie und Praxis der Literaturvermittlung in der 'nachbürgerlichen' Wissensgesellschaft". The jury honoured her intensive supervision as she reviews and discusses the work achieved by her current doctoral students every six months. She furthermore conducts theory workshops in regular intervals. Professor Wilko also helps to establish networks for students of the humanities.

Second Place Winner


Prof. Dr. Malte Brettel, who is the Director of the Department of Business Administration and Sciences for Engineers and Natural Scientists at the RWTH Aachen University and Director of the Günderzentrum RWTH Aachen University, was awarded for the second place with 3000. His efficient supervision allows his doctoral students to finish their doctorate within two years. In spite of this short time, his doctoral students are perfectly integrated into the research community and are also highly qualified to work outside the scientific community.

Third Place Winner

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Wegener received the third KISSWIN award and 2.000. Until 2003 professor Wegener has been Director of the Institute of Spatial Planning of the Dortmund University of Technology and is now partner at "Spiekermann & Wegener, Stadt- und Regionalforschung (S&W)" in Dortmund. The jury honoured his immense personal commitment, as well as his work for numerous events, such as conferences, workshops and summer schools.
